After seeing the Josef and Anni Albers exhibit at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum this past summer, I fell in love with a necklace designed by Anni Albers. It was made using zinc washers and grosgrain ribbon (see image here). After searching and many failed attempts, I finally figured out a way to make something similar!
MATERIALS:
- 30 to 50 flat washers (10 washers makes about 4 inches of necklace)
- ¾ yard grosgrain ribbon
------------------------------------------------------
STEP ONE:
Thread your ribbon up from behind washer #1. You should leave about 6 inches of ribbon on the end to the left. (This will be used to tie it around your neck.)

STEP TWO:
Thread the ribbon up along the side of washer #2 and back down through the middle. The end should be threaded back through the middle of washer #1. (Still with me??)

STEP THREE:
Pull ribbon tight so that washer #2 lies flat against washer #1.

STEP FOUR:
Thread the ribbon back up through washer #2 so it weaves underneath washer #1.

STEP FIVE:
Repeat process. Thread ribbon up alongside edge and down through the middle of washer #3.

STEP SIX:
Thread the end of the ribbon back through the middle of the washer #2.

STEP SEVEN:
Pull the ribbon tight to the right so you have all three washers lying flat. Repeat above steps until it's as long as you want it.

FINISHED ITEM:
It only takes about 1 hour to make (at the most) and looks great on! You can also find zinc colored washers, too. Therefore your necklace will look "silver" instead of this gold/copper color.
