November Interview: Daria of Glamscience!

Here's my interview with Daria of Glamscience. She makes greeting cards and bracelets and fun stuff - including those super rings in the November Sampler - all glittered up for your viewing/using/sending pleasure. Goooo Glitter!

Glamscience

State your name and purpose!
daria from glamscience! I glue glitter to things!
why glitter? why things?
I just think it's pretty, basically. plus, I had this idea that you could love glitter but not be all twee about it.
how did you start making things?
oh, I've always done it. I had one of those moms who, you know, decoupaged my play-doh can for kindergarten, so how could I not?
if a tree falls in the forest, what do you make?
paper. also some sort of incredibly scratchy yarn.
do you actually use a card every day?
no! I am a terrible correspondent. you're disappointed in me, I can tell.
can't you see my great big frown? but you like to make cards!
yes! I love making cards! I make the kinds of cards I'd like to send if I actually sent them!
what do you think is the most challenging aspect of designing stationery?
I imagine it gets a little rough, since there are so many competitors!
coming up with stuff to cover the really standard occasions is hard. because how many ways can you draw a birthday cake?
glamscience? why are you so glam?
you mean aside from the fact that I'm usually covered with glitter?
that's pretty glam
it's true! so are my kids. that's how you can tell which ones are mine on the playground.
nice. marking your territory
exactly. why pee when you can sparkle instead?
oh my god! nicely done
thank you.
glamscience, why should everyone go out and buy a ton of your cards?
because there is not enough ironic glitter in the world.
I think you have a really strong style sensibility...that sounds dorky...but, I can really tell when something is made by you that's neat.
thanks. yeah, it's actually something that I try to do. I mean, it just kind of happens to a certain extent, but I'm aware of it & encourage it.
you like to use exclamation points. why do you yell so much?
lol, hi, pot, I'm kettle!
are you secretly really angry? beneath all that glitter?
no, I'm sort of disenchanted, but I'm too much of a slacker to be really angry.
sometimes, crafty girls are angry. getting back to you, glamscience do you ever like to call people by a name other than their real name?
a nickname, you mean?
nope like an entirely different name. nevermind! : hee hee! I am a spaz I had a cookie!
you & sugar!
you and glitter!
but if you call them that all the time, then it becomes a nickname, doesn't it?
you got me there, semantics!
that's what 6 years of grad school will get you, semantics! also, a deep love for exclamation points!
you had six years of grad school?! what did you study? glitter? sparkles?
I wish. no, it was nothing crafty. English. then I went on the lam.
I'm so glad that you left the forces of Grad School for glitter and good times
so am I.
is that why you are so witty? the grad school stuff?
what, because grad school is such a funny funny place?
ha! I just imagine you around some fancy talking grad students...gluing shit to other shit and then adding sparkles and they're all Derrida blah blah. how has grad school prepared you for a life of glitter and making things?
it makes me happy every day to be doing this instead of that. plus I think that it makes me unafraid of looking at my work with a critical eye & deciding it needs revision.
if Camus believed that the only way to counter the absurdity of existence was thru creative and artistic expression, what place does glitter have in society?
Camus would have been in a much better mood if someone had sent him a glitter card, I'm sure.
if knitting and crocheting were to get in a fight, who would win?
knitting. two sticks vs. one. especially if you get some of those ghastly huge ones people are using these days.
do you carry a little pouch of glitter at all times? like fairy dust?
no. I had a pot of glitter in my bag for a week or so, but then I learned that the baby can open screw-top lids, so that experiment ended in tragedy.
wow...that's an advanced baby - one glittery, hands-on baby
sometimes when I travel I make myself a to-go kit of glitter, though.
awesome. I wish you wore wings all the time
like a fairy?
no need to get ugly

Interviews with Sampler Contributors and Sampler Friends! They're all kinds of fun and sometimes they're even informative. Did I mention there's often haiku involved?
